My family is known for making an event special by the food we eat. Whenever anything special is on the horizon, we immediately ask ourselves, “What’s for food?” Meaning, what will we eat to commemorate this moment in time. For example, my sister’s birthday was only a few weeks ago. The weekend before it came we asked her, “What do you want to do for you birthday?” Our conversation afterward was a little slow, so I cut to the chase, “Look, what are we going to eat?”
Birthdays are one thing, and Super Bowl Sunday is another. The Super Bowl is like our Eid for food. Every year we try to come up with something to eat that is more spectacular and disgusting than the year before. We’ve had home made chicken wings, twice baked potatoes, chilli, fajitas, tacos, you name it.
This year my sister and I sat down to discuss the Super Bowl sometime in January… not the teams that would be playing, but rather what we would be eating. We decided on…

… meatball subs!
They were quite yummy, with a side of fries. Fahma made the meatballs with fresh breadcrumbs, and they were just the right texture. We used shredded mozerella for the cheese, and Newman’s Own Sockaroni for the sauce. It’s supposed to be spicy spaghetti sauce. Overall, the combination of flavors was wonderful and on point.
I will say they were a little difficult to pick up and eat, but that’s the nature of the food. The cheese and sauce soaked into the bread a bit while it was in the oven, so it was nearly impossible to get a hold of it. We managed with forks and knives, which in my opinion, is not the way to eat a sub. It’s also actually giving me quite a bit of heart burn, too.
So did I like ‘em? Yes! They tasted great. Were they functional and good for later? Not so much. Would I eat ‘em again… probably. But then again, I can never turn down food.

Add it to the list (under the assumption that it’s not already on there).

And please don’t use my copyrighted phrase “what’s for food?” without first forwarding me $15.
I’m not paying you anything. You can claim money from me the day I stop making you food. Until then, as long as Fati and I keep making food for you to ask “What’s for food?”, we have the right to use the phrase too!
