Okay, that above title is a major over statement, BUT there is some truth to it. I may not be a die-hard fan of any one specific Michigan sports team, BUT, I am a fan of Michigan sports, in general. And enough of a fan to miss being around it when I leave here.
First there was Michigan basketball in the early 90s. You know what I’m talking about.
This, I think, lead my family straight into University of Michigan obsession. After the time-out fiasco, we switched from basketball to Michigan football, and since then it has been a fixture in my house. Each and every fall, on Saturday afternoons, our TV was tuned into ABC to watch some college football. And even if I wasn’t watching it as intensely as Osman or Fati, I was enjoying every bit of it. It is something else to see your brother and sister, year after year, almost have an aneurysm over a game and continue to come back to the same team that they “hate” and get “fed up” with the next year.
The Red Wings also made a cameo in our house from the late 90s to around 2002. Saturday nights meant Hockey Night in Canada with this lunatic:

He’s great with a slice of pizza
I got to experience the fun of three Stanley Cups and watching my brother set off the car alarms in celebration. I don’t think I ever really figured out all the rules of hockey, BUT I did know all the names of the Russians on our team, and that’s enough to count for me.
And last but not least, we have the Detroit Pistons. They are my *favorite* team to watch at a sporting event. Every year abbu manages to get tickets from work to a playoffs game and I usually manage to go with him. The thrill of pulling up to the Palace of Auburn Hills, finding your seats, grabbing some popcorn, smashing together thunder sticks and yelling at the top of your lungs “DEEEEEE-TROIT BAAAAAASKET-BALL” is something that I *know* I won’t get in Illinois.
But who knows? Maybe I’ll become a Bulls fan and start watching the Bears?
Chyea right. Michigan sports, I heart you ![]()

In our house, we have some extreme Chicago fans. As long as you don’t bring another extreme with you, you’ll be just fine here inshaAllah.
I’m pretty sure the Fab Five were part of a major scandal. Something about getting money from alumni.
I’m pretty sure no one cares
Michigan football pre-dated Michigan basketball. But I think you were too young to notice. My favorite “time-out” story has to go to Kate’s husband who ripped the curtains down in his mom’s living room and punched a whole through some dry wall. Awesome.
I’m pretty sure that they took down the Final Four banners because of that scandal. That’s kind of a big deal… D:
forever blue
In 1990, the day before the Michigan-Michigan State game, one of my friends asked me who I wanted to win the game, and I said Michigan (having never even heard of Michigan or Michigan State at that point). Thank God I chose right, because we woulda been some dumb green and white Sparties otherwise.
But we really didn’t start watching until the ‘93 tournament run, and as far as I can remember, we didn’t become diehard football fans until the fall of ‘93, so Ayesha was right. The first game I can remember watching from start to finish (you have to scroll down for the video):

A 4 down, 1 yard goal line stance *WOA NELLY*! I was hooked.
Hail
Every dude my age admits to crying themselves to sleep on the night of April 5th, 1993.
Horrible Days in Michigan Sports History:
4/5/93 - The Time Out
9/24/94 - The Hail Mary
9/1/07 - THE HORROR
Thank you Osman for picking blue over green. Aside from possibly becoming fans of a horrible franchise, who knows maybe we would’ve all ended up going to school there! And since there is no alternative campus to East Lansing (like Dearborn to Ann Arbor) I may have ended up at Schoolcraft my first two years!!
There is so much to be thankful for in this world
