It sure feels like it. Today it was a 81 degrees and uncomfortably humid. Bees and wasps alike were buzzing outside and around our deck. And of course, abbu had fired up the grill for a family BBQ.
A puhpo of mine came into town this weekend from Jersey and she requested that abbu barbeque. So he planned a menu filled with tikkah and kabobs. But I was uninterested from the sound of all that. I interjected yesterday and demanded there be hotdogs and hamburgers! As much as we barbeque throughout the summer, burgers and hotdogs, in my opinion, don’t get enough grill time. We usually have steak, chicken tikkah and kabobs on heavy rotation.
So abbu decided to listen to his daughter… and himself :-) He made chicken tikkah on skewers along with burgers and hotdogs.
It was quite delicious. Everyone agreed–including the little ones.
I made a very yummy plate. I had some potato salad, a burger (mayo, cheese, pickles, lettuce) and a hot dog (ketchup and onions). Of course… with some Coke!
I’ve been eating my burgers with the same three toppings since I can remember: lettuce, pickles and cheese. I’m not a very adventurous girl, because I know what I like and I stick to it. The few times I’ve tried onions, they end up being too strong. And when I’ve tried tomatoes, they make my mouth itch too much (I have a slight allergy to fruits–and yes, tomatoes are fruits!)
What do you like on your burger? Ever try anything really different or exciting? Ever had a juicy burger from a really good restaurant? Please, do share! I love food, and I love talking about it ![]()

WOW those pictures are making me HUNGRAY. Let me just say that I am getting very antsy to do my own BBQ soon. InshaAllah be prepared for a summer full of the grill.
i use to eat veg burger @ bk but then found it cooked with khanzeer!
vere can find good veg menu in atlanta plz?
Oh in terms of burgers and what I like on ‘em. I like lettuce and tomatoes, slopped in mayo under a slice of American cheese. The bun + burger + cheese + tomato + lettuce + mayo combo of a bite = amazing. I have yet to try onions. Pickles throw things off a bit for me but are still nice.
Man Ayesha, what’s with all these random FOBs infiltrating your blog?
I’m 100% on board with Saqib. You need a lot of mayo (learned from the wise Aamir) cheese, lettuce, tomato, and absolutely NO KETCHUP.
Cheese, tomato, lettuce, and a globs of mayo pretty much make any sandwich great.
You’re right, no ketchup. A lot of Desis put ketchup because they’re used to masala kabob “burgers” which need ketchup to offset them.
Again, though, for me tomato = key. Thin for sandwiches, thick for burgers!
Nothing like ketchup to ruin a perfectly good meal– yes I’m saying this right after admitting to put it on my hot dog.
Osman, anyone who has seen you make a sandwich knows you are a mayo enthusiast… you spread it around with a frosting spatula!
Speaking of enthusiams, it’s never too late to start Food Enthusiast Monthly… maybe in blog form! http://www.foodenthusiast.com
Ketchup and mustard are awesome on both hot dogs and burgers.
Anyone who puts anything more than mustard and onions on their hotdog is a communist.
asa sister,
are u sure these hot dogs were being zabihah-halaal, and not just halaal or zabihah or halaal-zabihah or kosher-haram or kosher-kosher-halaal-zabihah-halaal?
You daa man Waasiq,
I also ktsup on both burgers and hot dogs.
To the rest of you desofobic ABCDs, there aint nothin desi about the ketsup.
Spelling Desiphobic as DesiFOBic. Coicidence, or intended? That is the question.
I must say though that while I do say “no ketchup” I’m not scared of it or attributing it to Desis. I’ve just noticed that most of my ABCD friends, as well as aunties and uncles, are very keen to use ketchup and don’t even want to try experiencing the wonder that is mayonnaise.
Abbu! How can you say that there’s nothing desi about ketchup?? ONLY in the motherland do people put ketchup on pasta (including lasagna! the horror!), pizza, samosas, tikka, AND fried chicken. Like it’s going out of style.
Try fat slices of grilled onions, it takes away the sharpness and they become caramelized and sweet.
Instead of ketchup, try barbecue sauce. My favorite - Sweet Baby Ray’s.
You know what else is good on burgers - salad dressing! Ranch, thousand island, Italian… awesome way to dress up a burger :).
SBR should be banned because it’s so good. I’m going to ask for a river of it in Jannah inshaAllah. May Allah (swt) grant us entry.
InshaAllah in Jannah, I’ll be fishing for Swedish Fish.
