I’ve had it! Buying modest clothes is IMPOSSIBLE and too EXPENSIVE!
I’ve been trying for years now to build a wardrobe of long shirts, very loose pants, skirts, and jilbabs, but it just ain’t happening! After all this time I have a bunch of mismatched items that cost me a fortune.
I tried once to sew my own clothes, because I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the stores for a reasonable price, but that was disastrous. The hemlines on my skirts were crooked, and I looked like I was wearing a bag. Then I tried having a “professional” tailor sew me some skirts in Pakistan, and that was even worse. The materials looked all wrong and the buttons and zippers were breaking off left and right.
So I’ve tried scowering malls and stores in Muslim-populated areas (ie, Dearborn, MI) but everything is either way too expensive or extremely tacky.
Recently I’ve tried shopping online, but foreals… 50 dollars for a skirt for a CLEARANCE skirt at shukronline.com? Okay, maybe once or even twice is okay because I was looking in malls for so long for a nice long skirt. But after that? I can’t afford to drop $80 for a shirt and a skirt. I’m not made of money… I’m a teacher for crying out loud.
Why does it have to be this way? Why isn’t it easier for Muslim girls (of all shapes and sizes) to find modest loose clothing at a reasonable price? Am I really asking for too much? If you go to any regular mall, a pair of pants on sale might cost you $20, but are you ever going to find a normal skirt for that amount? Tshirts and tank tops fly off racks for $5 in the summer, but just finding a long sleeve loose shirt is like looking for a needle in a hay stack. Don’t get me started on the designer prices! (I think most designers realize that modest clothing is actually classy, so they’re interested in making modest clothes… at $100+)
Dah! All I want is to dress modestly, why does it have to be sooo FRUSTRATING!!!!!

Because maybe Allah is testing girls like you, making the haram easier (it’s easy to dress sleezy) and the halal harder (it’s hell to dress well).
But why would He choose such a test? There’s gotta be a reason, right? There is:
Allah wants to see who’s forreal when they say they want to be more modest. And to see if they’re legit, He’ll test them by making holes in their wallets in the process.
The ones who aren’t forreal, they’ll be unable to bear it, and choose to either wear tighter more revealing items or even worse not cover or remove hijab altogether. They can’t handle it. Just like fake stuff on raw gold is unable to bear the fire that the goldsmith puts it through. Will you girls be true gold?! Or the soot that falls off into the flames?
Epic, ain’t it? Well, to be fair, at least we live in a country where we can even wear hijab.
May Allah make it easy for us. And our wallets.
There is a store down here called Holliday Fashions- not sure if you guys have it there, but it has really nice long skirts for $20-$25. They’re very flowy and not at all body hugging. You just gotta look around a lot. Sometimes Kohl’s will have nice items too. May Allah make it easy for you insha Allah.
Oh and yeah…I don’t suggest making Shukr a regular stop
you may just empty out your bank account, hehe
i got some long shirts from target– look for shirt dresses or sweater dresses. also, i found a pair of wide leg jeans at forever 21 and they were wayyy too long, so i just got them hemmed, voila, i now look like a hippie
Thanks for the tips Mehreen, but unfortunately store bought long skirts just aren’t long enough for me… I’m 5′6". A standard "long" skirt comes up above my ankles.
And Allu Pea, I feel like I live in shirt dresses
I’ll be sure to check out the wide leg pants from F21.
Thanks for the help!
Good quality shalwar qameez suits at the Juma Bazar are still less than $15.
This calls for a fashion trip to the middle east…busy this summer?
Ross has some nice long & loose shirt dresses for very reasonable prices <3 Finding loose pants/ cute long skirts are tougher to find though.
I admit, modest clothes are not so easy to find, but while it’s still winter, you should keep checking out mall stores. F21 isn’t bad, Anthropologie is great (pricey but good quality), and H&M has nice, loose-fitting pants. I’m not big on skirts but I’d assume Carson’s or Macy’s should have an okay selection. I’ve seen a lot of non-slitted skirts on Devon, but I would assume they’d be ankle length on you. Or, you can ask someone to bring stuff back for you on a trip to the motherland…it’s risky, but often worth it.
In the end, if you find something to your liking that’s modest, just buy it. Money comes and goes, but you can’t always put a price on your comfort.
salam aleykum..
u know as saqibsaab said mabe its a test.. once a sister was asked why shes not wearing hijab she said because i dont have clothes that would cover me properly or fit with hijab!!
(she didnt wanna wear jilbab)
maybe you should try and look for some nice long cardigans or long shirts they wud be okay with any kind of pants..:)
i hope you find wat your looking for
I agree with everyone’s comments here..modesty in this country aint easy! I think you should give tailored tops from overseas another chance…the first couple times you go to them, they will invariably mess it up (because as one darzi told me in India, "I don’t know how to make sleeves that long anymore"), but I promise you it will be worth it in the end. Just buy your cloth here from Joann Fabrics or Devon and send it overseas with a shirt to model off of (expect that roughly 25% of your cloth will not come back..tis a fact of life)
If you have trouble with getting the right inseam, New York & Company makes dress pants with specific inseams. Plus, they go on sale every month or two…seriously, every month or two…I’m talking below $9.99 deals here
And because it’s geared towards working women, the cuts aren’t quite so..how shall I put it…chichore? lol
As for skirts, Bridgeview is your best option. And also try to stock up in the early spring, it’s when they’re clearing out all their winter cardigans!
See Ayesha, Chicago isn’t a terrible town..you just hafta know where to look
women should buy guys clothes…..
they’re baggy and cheap…
Aaaaaand *silence*.
Danish is clearly not married
Try Plato’s Closet… maybe…
The mall is definitely the wrong place to go if you’re looking for modest and affordable.
