Hijab–Who’s Stopping You?

Just a quick and interesting thought I had today.  I was in the teacher’s lounge and I heard some teachers discussing whether or not they’d allow their daughters to wear hijab when they grew up.  Both of these teachers didn’t wear hijab, and they both said very confidently that they would never stop anyone from wearing hijab.

Anyone, huh?  What about themselves?  When someone doesn’t wear hijab, who is really stopping them?  A parent?  A friend?  A spouse?  Or the person themself?  Afterall, when a girl puts on a hijab, in my opinion, the number one thing she is fighting is not culture, nor pressure, but her own desire to be admired or adored.

So really, if you’re not wearing it, and you’d never stop anyone else from wearing it, why stop yourself?

I grew up in Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Biology and Math. I taught in an Islamic school for 4 years, and recently have decided to stay home to be with my son. In my free time I enjoy acting like a goon with my family, laughing, cooking and/or eating, and, of course, spending time with the old husband, Mr. SaqibSaab himself :)

SubhanAllah… I remember they day I started wearing hijab.  I woke up for class one day and asked myself that same question, what’s stopping me? "no one" i put it on and went to class. Alhumdulillah.

Good question. Now if only we lived in a world where we could ask people that kindly without being reprimanded for judging them, being holier than thou (who’s Thou and why is he/she so holy, anyway?), etc.

WOW, what an interesting and philosophical perspective !!!!

Who is stopping you? hum ??

This is a great question to ask those who claim to be open minded and liberal people (especially Muslims). Why are you suppressing the instincts of fitra for yourselves.

Better yet, we should ask ourselves this question about everything, not just about the hijab. Right?
