I think this is a cultural thing. Where I come from, there is no ‘set time’ for when a party begins. As long as you turn up on the day, everything’s cool. In fact, being late is usually good for the host, because they have problems preparing the food and other things. What’s the point in having a party if you stress yourself out about who’s late or early?

One solution I saw at a wedding was setting the time at 7:30 sharp on the wedding card. Then when you got there, you found it was a "appetizer, social hour" from 7:30 to 8:30. This "social hour" accounted for people who are genuinely late (traffic, coming from far, etc.).
Then they started the program at 8;30, and the dinner at 9:00pm.
With a schedule like this, people who would leave late on purpose would arrive at 9:30 with half the food gone. So they learn their lesson.

This is a very nice post, because you’re absolutely right – I’ve complained many times about how Muslims are so often late, but I’m probably even worse when it comes to attending on time.I didn’t even know about that hadith – I guess that means no more backing out of parties at the last minute for me!
